Philosophy

We are learning, through physics and other sciences, that we are all interconnected and inseperable. Rather than being composed of individual atoms and particles the universe can be seen as a system of interacting quantum fields. From the viewpoint of field theory, we are all made of the same cosmic energy that flows through the universe. We learned of the Big Bang that described a singularity that exploded into energy and matter that formed into all things. We have speculated that this singularity may not be a singularity at all but arises due to a process called inflation. As the universe accellerates rapidly, particles arise from the vacuum through a dynamic Unruh effect. According to String Theory, there may even be other dimensions to the universe. While some of the dimensions have expanded, others may have contracted releasing giant amounts of energy. While we seem to be confined to four dimensions other particles may be manifested within higher dimensioned manifolds called branes. It may also be possible that space-time itself is an emergent form arising from these branes. We have expanded these ideas to include the universe as a whole, as a space-time object of all possible paths which forms the basis for all existance.

In the beginning there was emptiness, out of emptiness arose matter, energy, and space-time; this form of emptiness has evolved into a complex ordering allowing for life and consciounsess. Its from these higher dimensioned manifolds that properties of nature begin to arise. When we strip ourselves of all thoughts, conceptions, and the ever persistant mind, emptiness remains. It is the subtle essence through which all things rest upon.

Quotes

"the void exists ... It is the void which keeps things distinct, being a kind of separation and division of things. This is true first and foremost of numberse; for the void keeps them distinct." Aristotle

"It is true that as the empty voids and the dismal wilderness belong to zero, so the spirit of God and His light belong to the all-powerfull One." Gottfried Leibniz

Welcome

How much do we really know about the universe around us? What do we know about the beginning of time, and the origins of space? It may be possible that the universe has originated out of emptiness, and in a sense, remains a form of emptiness. When we look at our own quantum nature, what is the substance that makes up our reality? Take a journey through this site to find out what modern physics is saying about the universe, and expand your mind allowing yourself to ponder the true nature of emptiness.

The Concept of Time

The concept of time is related to the concept of change. In a sense time is used so that we can measure how things change relative to each other. There is nothing esoteric about time itself, but there is something esoteric about change, why do things change? It is true that we pass through time if you want to think about it that way, it is also true that each moment, or the the present "now", differs from the previous moment. [Read More!]

Cosmology & Particle Physics

Here we are, existing in this grand universe and yet we are most likely completely oblivious to its presence around us and our role within it. It takes a moment to look out at the stars to be reminded how grand and amazing the universe is, and the awe that we feel when we reflect on this. [Read More!]

Forces of Nature

To understand nature we must understand the forces of nature. Luckily for us there are only four fundamental forces described by interactions between particles. These forces include gravity, electromagnetic, strong nuclear, weak nuclear forces. These can account for nearly all the rich and intriguing phenomena that we know of within the universe. High Energy Cosmic Rays

Cosmic rays are high-energy particles consisting mainly of atomic nuclei such as protons and sometimes lighter particles such as electrons, positrons, and neutrinos that traverse the cosmos slamming into atoms in earth’s atmosphere. When a cosmic ray enters our atmosphere it can hit an atmospheric atom with enough energy to cause the atom to break apart into its sub-atomic components, yielding showers of sub-atomic particles. Astronomy Deep Sky Objects

Here is a special site I put together to demonstrate all the wonderful objects we find deep in space. Some of these objects can be seen with an amateur telescope on a clear night and would appear as diffuse objects. We have been able to resolve these objects with incredible detail and now know that they include star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. Click here to learn more about the night sky and some of the mysterious objects that we find up there.

Metaphysics

Metaphysics

Metaphysics allows us to explore ideas beyond the physical realm. What is the nature of consciousness? How can we explain enlightenment? What happens when we die? These types of questions lie outside the realm of physics, but are important to explore anyway. Click here to explore some of these fascinating ideas that lie in the realm of metaphysics.

An External World

There are many natural scientists, and especially physicists, who are receptive to the idea that there exists an external world, whose properties are independent of any individual human being and indeed of humanity as a whole; that these properties are encoded in ``eternal'' physical laws; and that human beings can obtain reliable, albeit imperfect and tentative, knowledge of these laws by hewing to the ``objective'' procedures and epistemological strictures prescribed by the (so-called) scientific method. ( Alan D. Sokal )

Apparent Reality

Is reality real or merely apparent? It appears real in that we can taste, smell, see, hear and touch, but what is the origin of these senses. Everything that we know about reality can be understood as originating from the mind but it is unclear whether these origins are based on a physical reality or are a result of mental cognition. What are the essential and distinguishing features necessary for experiencing reality. Click here to explore whether reality as we experience it really just a series of conceptualization provided by the mind.

Spirituality

Buddhism and Physics

I should mention that I have followed Buddhism now for several years. Some of the concepts that I find absolutely intriguing include the ideas on impermanence, emptiness, non-duality, and enlightenment. There are concepts in Buddhism based on the lack of independent existence that say reality is just an empty illusion created by the mind. Similarly, there are ideas in particle physics that say it is possible the universe is just a different form of emptiness as well. Both have to do with the lack of independent existence between objects and when we account for the universe as a whole we will see that the universe is interconnected and actually empty. The Buddhism philosophy agrees very closely with ideas of particle physics, and it is the connection between the two that I would like to present.

Past and Future Lives

We can look at our past and present experiences to understand the nature of our present mind. What if we could look at our past and present lives to understand who we are and where we came from? Does consciousness arise from the subtle mind, or is it connected to the body? What would happen if we went to sleep and never woke up again? Where does the mind go if the body ceases and the mind continues? Does it go into another realm of existance until the next monment of conception? Where did the mind come from in the first place? Can we transcend this universe or this cycle of existance by more deeply understanding the nature of the mind?

Some thoughts on Emptiness

We can think of a pebble which makes ripples in a pond. We see the ways in which waves combine and interfere, forming intricate patterns along the surface of the water. Behind these patterns is beauty and symmetry. In a similar way, the waves of matter and energy combine and interfere to form the patterns which we experience as reality. There is no substance to these waves; they are propagating forms of energy that lie along the surface of space and time.
